Mobile web

Just quickly, in response to Gary’s post ‘Is Australia ready for the mobile web?

Well, we (Pascal and I) are not! I’m starting to realise how important it is, especially for sites like EnjoyPerth. Pascal isn’t exactly a web developer (more just a designer), but I think we should be able to figure it out. But first he needs a new computer… working on a 5 year old Imac from home doesn’t exactly motivate him to work on EnjoyPerth! (and the fact that he has too many other hobbies!). So we’ll wait till the end of the month to see if there’s any announcements from Apple about new Imacs, and then buy one. In the mean time I’ve sent him the link to Gary’s post…

I accessed the web from my mobile for the first time ever last week (Pascal never has, his mobile is about 3 years old…). I went to EnjoyPerth and saw the left sidebar clearly, but everything else was messed up (luckily the left sidebar has some handy links!), so that’s not good enough, obviously! I also visited my gmail account and google calendar. To be honest, I didn’t even think I could access the web like that from my mobile, shows how much of a newbie I am…. So much to learn/do… so little time! I also need to look up what it’s costing me. I’m on a $49 plan cap with vodafone, which I never use up, so I have a feeling it’s not really costing me anything if I go on it occasionally. I guess I better find out for sure!!

Update: included in my $49 cap ($280 credit) is:

Mobile Internet (3G/GPRS) – $1 per 5 minute block for browsing of mobile sites.

And seeing I don’t come anywhere near the $280, I guess I can go on the internet a bit more often!

Thanks for your post Gary, you’ve mentioned it before, but this post has made me think… and taking steps to begin acting!

In other news, I’ve just become a bigger geek… I now have a 19inch wide monitor next to my Macbook (btw, I didn’t pay even close to that RRP!). So I am now working with two screens at once, and am liking it very much! Very handy when I can have the calendar open on one side, and a post I’m working on, on the other.

I need to wait for my telephone company to introduce GPRS charges as standard services so they are covered by my call allowance (right now they are charged extra) …

however, I am tempted to view my site from the web :P
